Glossary

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA):

Imagine the aorta as the main highway carrying blood throughout your body. An AAA is a bulge or weak spot in this vital artery located in your abdomen. If it bursts (ruptures), it's a life-threatening emergency.

Angiogram:

Think of this as a minimally invasive detective mission. Doctors use thin tubes (catheters) and x-rays to see inside your blood vessels, diagnose problems, and sometimes even treat them.

Angioplasty:

During this minimally invasive procedure, a tiny balloon is used to open narrowed or blocked arteries, improving blood flow.

Aortic Aneurysm:

Similar to an AAA, this is a ballooning of the aorta anywhere along its length. A burst aneurysm is a life-threatening condition.

Atherosclerosis:

This is the build-up of plaque (fatty deposits) inside your arteries. Over time, it can harden the arteries (atherosclerosis), narrowing them and restricting blood flow. Smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes are major risk factors.

Compression Stockings:

These are specially designed socks that gently squeeze your legs to improve blood flow and reduce swelling or discomfort.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT):

This is a serious condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. The most concerning complication is a pulmonary embolism (PE) which occurs when the clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs.

Endovenous Ablation:

This is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that uses heat (thermal ablation) to damage and close the diseased vein.

IVC Filter:

This small, cage-like device is placed in the inferior vena cava (the main vein in your body) to capture blood clots and prevent them from traveling to the lungs.

May-Thurner Syndrome:

This occurs when the main vein draining blood from your left leg gets squeezed by another blood vessel or scar tissue. This can cause chronic leg swelling, ulcers, and pain.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD):

This is caused by a build-up of plaque in the arteries of your legs and arms, narrowing them and reducing blood flow. Symptoms can include leg pain, cramping, and fatigue.

Sclerotherapy:

This is a common treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins. A solution is injected into the vein, causing it to scar and collapse over time.

Stent:

Imagine a tiny metal scaffold. Stents are inserted into narrowed arteries during angioplasty procedures to help keep the vessel open and improve blood flow.

Thoracic Surgery:

This is a surgical specialty focusing on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the chest, including the lungs, esophagus, and heart.

Vascular Disease:

This is a broad term encompassing various conditions affecting your arteries and veins.
